Distinguished dignitaries and guests on the dais, my learned colleagues and respected alumni of this institution, my nursing friends, dear students, all category of staff of this college and hospital it’s a great privilege and honour for me to welcome you all, on the auspicious occasion of 143rd foundation day and annual prize distribution ceremony of Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College and Hospital. It is a great pride to be here to celebrate an occasion when we as an institution can convey our deep reverence to its founders.
This college is one of the oldest medical institutions of our country and has cut a special niche in the history of medical education and research. It came into being long back in 1864 into the central hall, which served then as the “Sealdah Market”and was later converted to Sealdah Municipal Hospital.
On 1stDecember, 1873 the vernacular section of the Calcutta Medical College was shifted to this building, making it the first medical institution where the subject medicine was taught in Bengali. Starting with the humble student population of 44 it has grown in leaps and bounds to become an institute imparting medical education to around 1400 students and nursing
education to around 400 students.
In 1874 it was rechristened as the Campbell Medical School after the name of the then Lieutenant Governor Sir George Campbell.
In the Year 1900, The Fraser Ward was built to accommodate the surgical beds and it still continues to do so. On 1st July, 1948, the institution was upgraded to Campbell Medical College, with 105 medical students in the first year class. Finally, on 19th August, 1950 our prestigious institution got its present name to pay tribute to its illustrious alumina, Sir Nilratan
The Lady Elliot Hostel came into being in 1895, helped by the generous donation of Rs. 25,040/- by her highness of Murshidabad Shams – E- Jahan Begam Paradus Mahal Sahiba. This marvellous structure still attracts visitors’ attention. This College can boast of many eminent Physicians, Researchers and Medical Teachers who have worked here at various
points of time. I would like to mention a few preeminent names. Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, the ex- Chief Minister of West Bengal taught Anatomy and Materia Medica between 1912
Sri U.N. Brahmachari discovered Urea Stibamine in 1921, while working in a cubicle located in the Central Hall that helped in controlling the killer disease Kala-azar.

The Academic Building was sanctioned in the year of 1990, which houses some of the pre & para clinical departments, the Principal’s office and Central Library with its ever-growing stock of books, journals, research papers and state of art
Ever since 1873 this institution has been on the path of progress. It is regarded as a Prime Medical College of the Country with 1890 indoor beds. The capacity of MBBS students has been raised to 250 in the 2011-2012 Academic Session, the post graduate and post Doctoral courses in 26 disciplines of which 17 broad speciality and 9 super speciality are continuing keeping pace with the time.
Various para-medical courses are also regularly being taught. The Nursing Training school was established in 1944 as a wing of this institution. From 2008 onwards BSc Nursing course and MSc nursing has been continuously run successfully. NRS has been progressing by upgrading different departments in the field of training, research and patient care facilities.
The following departments and investigation facilities have been added to the huge list of services offered by this institution in the last one year namely SNCU, Paediatric Nephrology, PET CT, BMT unit, LINAC unit, Central OT Complex and night shelter for patient party. MCH Hub, state of art Mortuary and facilities of Blood Cell Irradiation along with a new Blood Bank are in the pipeline. Older ones are being extended and several new buildings are being built to accommodate the ever-increasing need of the day to provide hostel facility for the increasing number of students, as well as to house the increasing number of departments.
Nursing personnel, Medical Officers and Paramedical staff of various districts is being trained by various units like IMNCI, National Nodal Centre in collaboration with Indian Nursing Council and JHPIEGO in areas of Post Partum care and Family Planning. Workshops, Seminars, Scientific sessions, State conferences and CME Programmes are regularly being held for updating medical education. 10th January has been declared as ‘’Medical Education Day. The doctor’s day is celebrated with aplomb.

This institution has a history of gradual growth, expansion and broadening of its horizon. This continuous progress would not have been possible without the constant guidance and generous cooperation from the authority, the members of the organizing committee of this programme and from each and every of my colleague. I convey my sincere thanks to all and my heartfelt best wishes for the success of the 143rd foundation day and prize distribution ceremony of this glorious institution.

Though India became a free nation on August 15, 1947, it declared itself a Sovereign, Democratic and Republic state with the adoption of the Constitution on January 26, 1950. A salute of 21 guns and the unfurling of the Indian National Flag by Dr. Rajendra Prasad heralded the historic birth of the Indian Republic on that day.
Remembering them we, from NRSMC, celebrated the Republic Day with culutural activities like singing, flag hoisting and tributing the nation.
Ethics and moral values will be a part of the course offered to aspiring doctors of Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College. This course will be conducted be the sanyasi's of Ram Krishna Mission.
Starting from first year to fourth, even the Post graduate Trainee are to be trained through the this course. The principal of NRSMC, Dr. Prof. Debasis Bhattacharyya is taking full initiave to conduct this course.
1st December is the inagural day of NRSMC and the entire course will be discussed there in details.
